Boogie Songs Quiz ================= From: Steve Mc Newsgroups: rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s Subject: Boogie Quiz Clips Results Message-ID: Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2007 07:03:23 -0700 This one was rather difficult, especially if you didn't have a lot of the boogies, most likely procured from the obscure wings of Roger's and Norm's collections. Maybe the next one will be easier. It may have felt like the hardest quiz, especially soon after the 98% of the Leiber & Stoller quiz. The average % correct was only 56%, the 3rd lowest of the quizzes, just slightly easier than the hardest which was the Intros Quiz @51.7% average correct, and the Guitar Quiz @53.9%. Excuse my digression, but that Intro's % surprised me, so maybe I'll have to do another Intro's quiz. The scores were: 64 RocketManJoe 60 Marc 48 Rick 47 Cathy 30 Mark 20 Bill The hardest ones, not gotten by anyone were: #02 Al Simmons: "Old Folks Boogie" #20 Jimmy Reed: "State Street Boogie" #29 Lonnie Pitchford: "One-String Boogie" #34 Roy Milton: "Bartender's Boogie" The easiest ones, gotten by all, were: #07 Bill Haley: "Rock a Beatin' Boogie" #08 Chuck Berry: "Guitar Boogie" #12 Drifters with Cyde McPhatter: "Let the Boogie Woogie Roll" #13 Elvis Presley: "Milkcow Blues Boogie" #14 Hank Snow: "The Rhumba Boogie" #19 Jerry Lee Lewis: "Lewis Boogie" #25 Johnny Cash: "Luther Played The Boogie" The only single was RocketMan Joe who got: #32 Meadowlarks: "Boogie Woogie Teenage" The "almost" singles were: #22 Joe Turner: "Rocket Boogie 88" with Joe getting it entirely correct and Marc getting the artist, and #33 Rolling Stones: "Shake Your Hips" with Marc getting it entirely correct and Rick getting the artist. The next hardest ones, gotten completely only by one but with two others getting the just the artist: #10 Doc Watson: "Freight Train Boogie" . . . Joe | Cathy & Marc #26 Lightnin' Hopkins: "Lightnin's Boogie" . Marc | Cathy & Rick The doubles were: #01 Elmore James: "Country Boogie" . . . . . Marc & Cathy #05 Arthur Smith: "Guitar Boogie" . . . . . Joe & Cathy #11 Dr. Ross: "Boogie Disease" . . . . . . . Joe & Cathy #35 Slim Harpo: "Boogie Chillen" . . . . . . Joe & Marc #37 Tiny Bradshaw: "Bradshaw Boogie" . . . . Joe & Rick #39 ZZ Top: "La Grange" . . . . . . . . . . Joe & Marc A few things came up that should be mentioned for possible solution/resolution. I had/used "Mojo Boogie" by J B Lenoir. Cathy guessed "The Mojo" by JB Lenore(sic), which I also had. We think "The Mojo" came from Roger. Anyway, they definitely are the same song, though different versions. Could anyone corroborate the different names and possibly the dates ? #15 Howlin' Wolf: Houserockin' Boogie &/or Howlin' Wolf's Boogie. The clip I used is named House Rockin' Boogie. Joe pointed me to a site that used my same sample, and the title they had was Howlin' Wolf's Boogie. So, is this the same song with two different names, or are there two different songs ? I do have both named versions, but they are identical. I believe I was able corroborate that #29 was Lonnie Pitchford. Doing his One String Boogie on his homemade diddley bow. It appears to be from/on The National Downhome Blues Festival Vol. 1, recorded in Atlanta on 10/19-24/1984. If interested, here's a Lonnie link: http://deltaboogie.com/deltamusicians/pitchfor/ As I indicated, I took some poetic liberty with Shake Your Hips and La Grange. Being fairly familiar with Shake Your Hips, but not having any idea if boogie was in the lyrics, I went checking to see what the lyrics were. Whoa, a bit of a serendipitous moment. Right there, "She said, "What do you know, There's Slim Harpo!", and Slim's version of John Lee Hooker's classic Boogie Chillun was right after the next clip. #01) Elmore James: "Country Boogie" #02) Al Simmons: "Old Folks Boogie" #03) Amos Milburn: "Sax Shack Boogie" #04) Andrew Sisters: "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" #05) Arthur Smith: "Guitar Boogie" #06) Bill Haley: "Birth Of The Boogie" #07) Bill Haley: "Rock a Beatin' Boogie" #08) Chuck Berry: "Guitar Boogie" #09) Delmore Brother: "Freight Train Boogie"" #10) Doc Watson: "Freight Train Boogie" #11) Dr. Ross: "Boogie Disease" #12) Drifters with Cyde McPhatter: "Let the Boogie Woogie Roll" #13) Elvis Presley: "Milkcow Blues Boogie" #14) Hank Snow: "The Rhumba Boogie" #15) Howlin' Wolf: "Houserockin'" or "Howlin' Wolf's Boogie" #16) Ink Spots with Ella Fitzgerald: "Cow-Cow Boogie" #17) J B Lenoir: "Mojo Boogie" #18) J.B & His Hawks: "Combination Boogie" #19) Jerry Lee Lewis: "Lewis Boogie" #20) Jimmy Reed: "State Street Boogie" #21) Joe Turner: "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" #22) Joe Turner: "Rocket Boogie 88" #23) John Lee Hooker: "Boogie Chillun" #24) Johnny Burnett: "Rockabilly Boogie" #25) Johnny Cash: "Luther Played The Boogie" #26) Lightnin' Hopkins: "Lightnin's Boogie" #27) Little Junior's Blue Flames: "Feelin' Good" #28) Little Richard: "Little Richard's Boogie" #29) Lonnie Pitchford: "One-String Boogie" #30) Louis Jordan: "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" #31) Mabel Scott: "Baseball Boogie" #32) Meadowlarks: "Boogie Woogie Teenage" #33) Rolling Stones: "Shake Your Hips" #34) Roy Milton: "Bartender's Boogie" #35) Slim Harpo: "Boogie Chillen" #36) Sugar Chile Robinson: "Numbers Boogie" #37) Tiny Bradshaw and his Orchesta: "Bradshaw Boogie" #38) Virtues: "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" #39) ZZ Top: "La Grange" #40) Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns: "Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu"
